Sir David Mark Rylance Waters (; born 18 January ) is an English actor, playwright and theatre director. He is known for his roles on stage and screen, having received numerous awards including an Academy Award, three BAFTA Awards, two Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards.
In he was included in the Time list of the world's most influential people.[2] In he was made a knight by Queen Elizabeth II.
He was the first artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe in London, between and After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he made his professional debut at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow in He appeared in the West End productions of Much Ado About Nothing in and Jerusalem in , winning the Olivier Award for Best Actor for both.
He has also appeared on Broadway, winning three Tony Awards: two for Best Actor for Boeing Boeing in and Jerusalem in , and one for Best Featured Act
